There were several welcome visitors to an illustrated talk on "The Waterways and Mills of the River Stour" at our meeting on 9th June. Brian Doorne, a good photographer with an obvious enthusiasm for his subject, began with an interasting history of mills in Kent starting with Roman remains found in Ickham by an archeological dig. He traced the mills and waterways from Pegwell Bay to Lenham, and showed many "hidden away" beauty spots in our county.

When The Viking ship the Hugin was rowed into the bay at Pegwell by fifty three Danes in 1945, they apparently wore out the seat of their pants in the process as fifty three pairs of trousers had to be rushed to the scene!

Crabble corn mill near Dover was built in 1812 to feed the troops at the expected but non existent Napoleonic invasion.

In our book Club this month we are reading "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak.
